Advanced Mechanical Design of PWR Fuel Assemblies

Course number: TRF-M0002-G

Objectives:

Understand the origins of the PWR Fuel Assembly component designs. The trainee will profit from the Framatome experience with world-wide safety authorities requirements and reactor fuel design for different reactor types (Siemens-type, Westinghouse type, EPR).

Content:

The training encompasses an overview for the different Fuel Assembly components (Spacer Grid, Top & Bottom Nozzles including Filter element, Fuel rods, Skeleton, Fuel Assembly):

  • Derivation of the design features and their influence on the global Fuel Assembly behavior

    • Derivation and assessments of design criteria

    • Component testing

    • Introduction to the main mechanical design codes

    • Introduction to Fluid-Structure-Interaction (FSI) phenomena (Fuel Assembly Bow, Fretting and Vibration)

  • Integration of those features within Manufacturing & Documentation

Specific technical training on improved designs can be offered on demand:

  • HTP Fuel Assemblies

  • HTP-I Fuel Assemblies

  • FOCUS Fuel Assemblies

  • GAIA Fuel Assemblies

Presentation of different materials & their manufacturing

  • M5, Zry-2, Zry-4 materials

  • Beta-quenched materials

  • Visit of Prototyping Lab

  • Visits of fabrication sites (MELOX, ANF, FBFC, Richland)

HTP, FOCUS, GAIA, and M5 are trademarks or registered trademarks of Framatome or its affiliates, in the USA or other countries.

The contents, the format (see hereafter), and the duration are adapted according to the customer request and needs.

The course materials are based on the most up-to-date world-wide Framatome know-how to provide to our attendees the highest quality on the technical content of our courses.

The teaching material includes interactive PowerPoint presentations and  hands-on exercises. The training can also comprise exercises on simulator,  on equipment mock-ups, and also guided visits of test facilities.

The instructors come from the Framatome GmbH Fuel Engineering site. Their knowledge is based on years of experience in engineering service activities, as well as on the specific competences necessary for the training.
